Marshall McLuhan Award in Digital Humanities

This award has been established in honor of the scholarship of Marshall McLuhan which helped to create a paradigm shift regarding an understanding of the function and effects of media. Noted for coining the phrase "the medium is the message," McLuhan's work was prophetic as it predicted a digital culture. It is in honor of the interdisciplinary nature of his work and his attention to media and related technology as cultural tools that this award has been named.

As an annual award, MacBain & Boyd welcomes manuscript submissions from scholars in the digital humanities who hold a faculty appointment at a college or university (including adjunct positions).  Authors must hold a doctorate in their field of study. The 2018 deadline is rolling (with award issued in 2019 by publication).

Isaac Bashevis Singer Award in Creative Writing, Poetry, and Literary Criticism

This award has been established in honor of the literary achievement and concern for cultural preservation of I. B. Singer, Nobel Prize Laureate. Singer's work embodied a curatorial effort to share the stories of the American Jewish community and the nature of the human condition. With a knowledge of the significance of language as a purveyor of culture, his work in the Yiddish language added to the richness and vibrancy of American, and world, literature. It is in honor of his work as a writer and cultural leader that this award has been named.

Annually awarded to a scholar in the fields of creative writing, poetry, and literary criticism, MacBain & Boyd welcomes manuscript submissions from scholars who hold a faculty appointment at a college or university (including adjunct positions). Authors must hold a doctorate or advanced graduate degree appropriate to their field of study and teaching position. The 2018 deadline is rolling (with award issued in 2019 by publication).

Maria P. Williams Award for Best First Book by a Female Scholar
in Film, Television, and Media Studies

In the 1920s, Williams and her husband founded and operated a booking exchange for African American filmmakers and theaters. Her work helped to establish African American women's voices in early 20th century American independent cinema, and it is in honor of her innovations in filmmaking that this award has been named.

As an annual award, MacBain & Boyd welcomes manuscript submissions from female, first-time scholarly authors who hold a faculty appointment at a college or university (including adjunct positions).  Authors must hold a doctorate in their field of study. The 2018 deadline is rolling (with award issued in 2019 by publication).
